Living the Book of Mormon: "Abiding by Its Precepts" Review

"I told the brethern that the Book of Mormon was the most correct of any book on earth, and the keystone of our religion, and a man would get nearer to God by abiding by its precepts. than by any other book." Joseph Smith's statement rings true 166 years later. The Book of Mormon clarifies many principles taught in the Bible and invites us to draw closer to God and live a more Christlike lives. In the 2007 Sidney B Sperry Symposium, talented teachers and respected scholars will offer fresh, practical ideas about how we can apply principles taught in this standard work. Topics covered include redemption through Christ, the "three Rs" of the Book of Mormon, and the divine precept of charity.

Buddhist Precept and Practice: Traditional Buddhism in the Rural Highlands of Ceylon

Buddhist Precept and Practice: Traditional Buddhism in the Rural Highlands of Ceylon Review

See more picture

When this book was first published in 1971, under the title Buddhist Precept and Practice, The Times Literary Supplement Wrote: This is an epoch-making piece of research which must mark a change in direction and appreciation if it is taken seriously and studied in details. Dr. Gombrich is concerned with religious change in belief and practice, not only in modern times but over the two and a half millennia during which Buddhism has flourished. He concludes that Sinhalese Buddhism has been remarkably conservative and rejects the assumption that it degenerated from an original high standard, by questioning whether it ever was as pure as a superficial reading of classical texts might suggest. It would be very difficult to provide a combination of scholarship and sympathy such as that which pervades Dr. Gombrich s book and makes it a landmark in the study of religion. Out of print for many years, the book is now republished corrected but substantially unchanged.

Richard Gombrich has been Boden Professor of Sanskrit, Oxford University and Professor Fellow of Balliol College since 1976. He has published 8 books and about 40 articles, mostly on Buddhism. His most recent books are Theravada Buddhism: A social History from Ancient Benares to Modern Colombo and Buddhism Transformed: Religious Change in Sri Lanka; the latter is intended to do for modern Sinhalese Buddhism in the cities what Precept and Practice did for its traditional manifestation in the countryside.

It is obvious, that their attention and curiosity end with the fable; and the application which follows is irksome to them; its intention, therefore, is lost. The plan of the author, in the following little volume, is, so to prepare the young reader, that he may, without difficulty, apply the fables himself; for which purpose, each of them is preceded by an introduction, explaining the occasion on which it was delivered, and pointing out the fault intended to be exposed and corrected.

Rules of Civility: The 110 Precepts that Guided Our First President in War and Peace

Rules of Civility: The 110 Precepts that Guided Our First President in War and Peace Review

See more picture

As a young man, George Washington admired and copied into a little notebook 110 rules for civil behavior that originated from a Jesuit textbook. Washington took these rules very much to heart, and that handwritten list remained with him throughout his life, serving as inspiring guidance from his military days at Valley Forge and Yorktown to his two terms as president.Guidance that at first sounds archaic, it is in fact just as relevant as—indeed, possibly more necessary than—it was nearly three hundred years ago. Richard Brookhiser makes clear the pertinence of these rules for modern readers and proposes that now more than ever we will be wise to follow the modest example of such a great man. Witty and insightful, Brookhiser’s commentary offers real-world instruction in the lost art of self-discipline, and his new preface provides a compelling and timely context in which to employ these guidelines today.
